[WARBAND] once you've conquered the entire map is there any reason to keep playing?

It seemed to me like it just turned into a commerce and internal politics simulator, which has its merits, but it's not something I'm interested in. Is there something I missed?

I've found a very easy way to play.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 02:41 AM PDT

I get an army of %100 archers, upgrade them by auto battling looters, find an enemy army, make sure that It's daytime and I'm on clear area, tell my archers to take a loose formation, kill as many as possible until enemy infantry comes near, retreat, repeat. Am I the only one who does this and should I be doing this?

Warband mods for better horse archers?

I heard dickplomacy had better horse archers but can't find it hosted anywhere. Just want to play a native-ish game, not pendor or anything that is total conversion.

    My Bannerlord experience so far

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 04:09 AM PDT

I saw a video about this game a while ago and have had it saved on my steam wishlist ever since. I got it during the steam summer sale and started as empire.I spent a while learning the basics and steam rolling looters. Eventually I decided to become a mercenary and then a vassal for the southern empire and watched as Battania, Sturgia, and the Northern empire where wiped out in the first round of major wars.

I get awarded Revl which I was happy was a city and not a castle but it was also far away from most of my allies but hey again, better than nothing. Around this time I started adding mods and things got way more interesting. With separatism, rebellions start springing up around the map but after a few were stamped down (RIP kingdom of Fen Uvan) the rest made peace with their former factions and things in Calradia were actually somewhat peaceful for about a year or so.

I spent most of this time trying not to resort to using the developer console to give myself a bunch of gold by using all the party members I can for caravans. Besides that I would be fighting Bandit militias which are from a mod that spawns a leader for bandit/looter groups that merge so you get 60-120+ bandit armies to fight which helps midgame when looters get boring. This particular mod, while nice for a while, caused some issues though so I eventually took it off. I watch as the support for war against the khusaits creeped up until finally war is declared. Then it's like a dam broke and wars and rebellions started everywhere. I raise armies and take castles and prisoners. Rhagae gives them to other people because she's dumb. During this time some people start dying in battle like Caladog and Lucon while others had illegitimate children with wanderers, looking at you Derthert. Speaking of which I also get an alert that Zimena the Black, a wanderer that's been in my clan since the beginning is pregnant!? I look at my wife Arwa with her high fighting stats and say I don't know anything about this. Eventually she has the baby so I check the enclyopedia and the father is...Bandit militia. Yikes.

At this point I start to realize the Southern Empire is doomed. They're getting attacked from all sides and slowly losing ground making it only a matter of time. I always planned on making my own kingdom and my garrison in Revl was full so I went ahead and broke away from the Southern empire. I quickly disabuse Rhagae from trying to bring that shit over here so now I look towards the closest target which is Ustokol castle, now owned by the Western empire. I eventually persuade its owner to switch sides but he doesn't bring the castle with him. Oh well we will do this the fun way then. We storm the castle and after getting knocked out of the battle early because an enemy somehow got under me on the seige tower ladder we eventually take the castle but not without heavy losses. We didn't lose a lot of soldiers necessarily but Zimena the Black, my trusted companion since the beginning had died during the battle. Rip Zimena you will be avenged!

I have conquered every castle and city from Swadia, their lords are still out there, so how do I completely destroy them? Is there a way to kill them permanently?

Warband Noob Tip: When to hold the walls.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I know Bannerlord is all the rage right now, but Warband is a cheaper (and imo a more finished and mod-supported) game right now. This is meant to help out anyone currently struggling in their games.

It's no secret even to novice players that sieges are an integral part of any warband campaign, especially if you join a faction or ever want to hold your own town or castle. There is an extreme difficulty spike immediately after you get your first fortress -- either by starting your own faction from scratch (NOT recommended, especially for noobs) or by being awarded one by an existing monarch. The difficulty comes from the fact that 99 times out of 100 your fortress will have a very small garrison -- if any garrison at all -- and will most likely be seen as the most vulnerable target on the map to the ai. Before you finish your mad scramble to cram as many troops inside as possible, it is very likely that you will be attacked by the ai. It is not uncommon for a marshall to even bring his entire kingdom down on your tiny little garrison. Long story short: if the ai ever bothers to besiege you, they will always do it with overwhelming force. If their forces start to outnumber yours more than about 5 to one, you may want to seriously consider just how valuable this fortress really is. Due to the way the battle size cap is implemented, you simply may not be able to field enough men at once to hold them back if your tactics skill is not sufficiently high enough.

But for the purposes of this post, let us say that you have decided to stand and fight. Fortunately for you, defending castles is much easier than attacking them, especially in vanilla. Almost everyone will tell you to hold position at the top of the ladder or siege tower and slaughter the enemy as they funnel through the bottleneck. This is one effective tactic, but it should not be used in every situation. To quote "the Art of War":

"Strategy without Tactics is the slowest route to victory; tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." -Sun Tzu

Here are some situations in which you would WANT to hold the walls:

    1. Your reinforcements' spawn-point is also on the walls
    2. The choke-point at the top of the ladder/siege tower is extremely narrow
    3. You have lots of good heavy infantry WITH SHIELDS (Sergeants, Huscarls etc)
    4. The crenelations (the stone square things that stick up out of the wall in regular intervals) provide adequate protection from enemy missiles.

Here are the MAJOR DISADVANTAGES to holding the walls:

    1. It usually takes longer for your reinforcements to join the fight than the enemy's. You're going to take casualties no matter what (which is why surgery is such an important skill). The more casualties you take, the fewer men you have holding the chokepoint. The fewer men you have holding the chokepoint, the faster you take casualties. Say you have 40v40 on the walls. Eventually you take enough casualties that you now have 20v20 (it would probably take longer for you to lose 20 men than the enemy, but let's assume the enemy has been getting constant reinforcements). Both sides get reinforcements at the same time, so now it's 60v60. HOWEVER, it takes several minutes for your forces to arrive so in the meantime it's actually 20v60 on the walls, and you could easily be overrun before your reinforcements arrive.
    2. Some settlements, such as Dhirim and Praven, have super wide openings at the top of the ladders/siege towers, negating any possible chokepoint and exposing the defenders to constant, ruthless fire from enemy skirmishers.
    3. It is incredibly difficult to deliberately man the defenses. The orders in this game are not designed for manning battlements. Archers often initially spawn in appropriate sniping positions on the walls, but reinforcements tend to just swarm the chokepoint, negating the purpose of missile units. Issuing manual "hold position" orders will often cause the archers to shift around like idiots into positions where they lose line of sight on the enemy and stop shooting.
    4. If the enemy has a lot of heavy infantry themselves (especially the Nords), they can often brute-force their way through chokepoints, slaughter archers, and cause pandemonium before you can drive them back.
    5. Holding the walls is extremely dangerous for the player. Remember, once YOU go down the battle ends -- no matter how well you were doing. You take casualties on the retreat and you might not even have enough hitpoints left to manually command the fight again. Even if you do, you will have fewer hitpoints and will be even easier to take down. Standing on the walls with your men to hold the chokepoint is a great way to catch a stray crossbow bolt to the face from the other side of the map. I have personally lost count of how many times this has happened to me (I fucking hate the Rhodoks I FUCKING HATE THEM).

I hereby propose an alternate strategy for your consideration. If you keep having to reload a siege defense that you just can't seem to win, try doing this if the following conditions are met:

    1. Your reinforcements spawn on the ground behind the walls.
    2. You have a LOT of archers/crossbows
    3. You have at least some infantry and/or cavalry (although this part is optional, I'll explain why later)

At the beginning of the battle, lead your men off the walls. Just let the enemy have them. Lead your men back to the reinforcements zone, which will often be at the bottom of a long, exposed staircase (some of you may already see where this is going). Tell your infantry to hold position at the base of the stairs and have your cavalry off to the side. Have your archers hold position further back, where they each have a perfect line of sight on the staircase. Bonus points if you can have them shoot sideways into the stairs.

This strategy works really well for siege tower settlements like Dhirim or settlements where it takes the enemy several moments to get to the walls. If this is not the case, then have your infantry and cavalry hold position while you move the archers first and then have the infantry and cavalry fall back once you are in position. You will probably take a few casualties at first but don't panic: it will all be worth it in a moment.

What you have essentially done is turn the stairway of doom into yet another chokepoint the enemy must break through. This time however, you have all the advantages.

    1. The wall itself protects your men from enemy archers outside the walls. They can't shoot what they can't see, and now they have to trickle in one at a time up the ladder in order to see you. Sometimes, they won't even bother shooting once they commit to climbing the ladder and will instead charge into melee like complete idiots.
    2. Your reinforcements spawn right in the fight, but the enemy's don't. This creates the opposite scenario described above. Instead of a constant bloodbath, your men will have several minutes to rest and reposition in between waves, and you can destroy the enemy piecemeal. Your position never gets overrun either, since as soon as you lose too many men, dozens of your men spawn in t-posing on top of the surprised enemy and annihilate them.
    3. Heavy infantry is nothing to heavy crossbows. Even if the Nords spam huscarls, they will have a hard time breaking through. It is extremely difficult to fight in melee while under heavy missile fire. Since friendly fire isn't a thing unless the player shoots somebody, you shouldn't have any worries about shooting into the mass melee at the base of the stairs. As soon as a huscarl drops his shield to swing at even a lowly peasant, he will be hit by four or five crossbow bolts and die.
    4. Formations are easy. Your infantry and cav just have to stand still at the bottom of the stairs and (optionally) charge. Your archers just have to stand still and shoot. Not even the galaxy brained ai can mess that up.
    5. It is much safer for you. You can easily stand behind your infantry to command the battle. You can keep your shield up the whole time without having to go into melee too often, and you won't be under nearly as much missile fire from enemy sharpshooters at once.

Some general advice for directing the flow of battle:

    1. If you have cavalry, pull the infantry back a ways from the stairs and allow the enemy to reach the bottom. Then, have the infantry charge while the cavalry hits them from the flank in a pincer. Once they start pushing their way up the stairs, order them to fall back. Rinse and repeat. All the while unleashing volley after volley of murderous fire into the clumped mass of enemies.
    2. If your archers run out of ammunition or the enemy starts to break through, order the archers to charge. Your archers should have taken almost no casualties at this point and should be able to swarm all over the enemy in a big zerg that can take down even the heaviest infantry left in the wave. Once you take enough casualties for your reinforcements to spawn in, pull your archers back to their original positions and continue as usual. Rhodok Sharpshooters are the best for this because they have the highest damage per shot in the game, and also are equipped and trained to fight extremely well in melee with their board shields and military hammers. Other archers work here too, it's just that the Rhodok Sharpshooters work best.

Thank you for reading all the way to the bottom. Feel free to critique this strategy in the comments or suggest your own. Now, less talking and more raiding!
