What Makes Mount and Blade Special...

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:33 AM PDT

This is a short analysis trying to explain the core appeal of Mount and Blade. I just felt like writing this.

At it's most fundamental level, Mount and Blade is a combination of two power fantasies. The first of these power fantasies is the fantasy of being a badass warrior, cutting down enemy after enemy. Pretty much every single action rpg to some extent also fulfills this power fantasy, from Skyrim to Dark Souls. The second power fantasy is the fantasy of being a military commander, leading an army to a decisive victory. Games like the Total War series or other strategy games also fulfill this power fantasy.

What makes Mount and Blade special from these other games is that it manages to fulfill both of these power fantasies at the same time. By making you a military commander but also giving you a physical character in the battlefield Mount and Blade provides you both experiences at the same time. To my knowledge, no other game does this.

I would say that these two power fantasies are the core of Mount and Blade. Every single mechanic in the game is designed to in some way enhance either of these power fantasies. Money is either used to buy weapons/armor, making you a badass warrior, or it is used to build a bigger army. Companions have traits that enhance the qualities of your army appealing to the power fantasy of being a military commander. Fame, renown, influence are generally mechanics designed to enhance your army. Everything is some way tries to enhance these two power fantasies.

I would say that this is probably the best way to describe Mount and Blade. I also think that currently the biggest problems with Bannerlord is the campaign ai which as many have pointed out, oftentimes runs around with most of their army being recruits. This is probably also the case because this game doesn't have shared exp like Warband did, making it hard to level up low tier armies without having them die in battles.
